How we track each other and communicate - GeoPro overview
Some folks have asked how we synchronize our activities when much of the time at least one of our cell phones is out of service range. The short answer is that we use a new satellite service called GeoPro. It has its issues, but it is much better than the combination of SPOT, handheld ham radios, and cell that we used on the AT.
I put an overview of the service with some pictures of the device and the web interface on a page off our main journal site: http://tadteam.posterous.com/pages/geopro-satellite-locator-details.
It's not at all for everyone but I suspect many SPOT users would be better served by this. It's a much more reliable and robust service. And it does cost more but not crazy more.
If anyone would like to grill me about it, feel free.
