Pacific Crest Trail Map

Preparations

Each year it seems to be getting easier to prepare for our annual section hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. This year we plan to continue where we left off last year at Stevens Pass, WA, and hike northward to Manning Park, Canada. I know there is still a ton of snow up in them thar hills, especially north of Stehekin. We will be taking the Glacier Peak Detour route for several reasons - officially the PCT route over the Suiattle River is still "closed", we won't have months of thru hiking under our belts to go 20-30 miles a day, and we simply can't carry that large amount of food to get to Stehekin. My wonderful husband will resupply us at the White River Trailhead, again at Stehekin, and at Rainy Pass, and then wait for us at Manning Park to drive us home to Oregon.

Two other hikers will be joining me - Jingle Bell, who has section hiked every year with me, and Sole Duct who hiked with us last year from Mt Adams through the Goat Rocks Wilderness and dropped off at White Pass. Sole Duct will drop off early again at Stehekin and catch a ride home while Jingle Bell and I make our way to Canada. We haven't received our Canadian entry permits yet - I'll have to call them sometime next week and get a heads up on what's going on.

We have been very spoiled having cell phone service in Oregon and Washington the past two years, but this time there is no cell service north of Stevens Pass. I also used the SPOT for last year's adventure and this year family members will rely on my SPOT's tracking feature to keep on eye on our whereabouts.

I have been comparing the different bear canisters and the Ursack and finally decided to go with a Ursack. It came down to weight. There are more bears in the woods up north and I simply don't want to take any chances. Jingle Bell will probably also buy a Ursack, and Sole Duct already has her own BearVault canister.

We've been busy trying to get some training hikes under our belts and carrying 20 lb daypacks. Tomorrow we plan on a nice long vertical hike up the north side of Mt Hood.

Hike on...
