Welcome to our Pacific Crest Trail journal! This journal will be jointly written by Emily (mother) (no tail name yet – more on that later) and Aja (daughter) heretofore known as Ramblin’ Rose.
Many of the preparations are done .. and it is time to start the journal.
I have dreamed of hiking the PCT for over a decade. I have read journals, gathered gear, and dreamed of this journey for so long – and now it is a reality .. we leave in mid-April.
I always said that when the last kid is out of the house, I will hike the PCT. Now, the last kid is out of the house .. and this is the year!
When I told my daughter, Ramblin’ Rose, who, by the way has been listening to me go on about the PCT for years, that this is it, this is the year – she asked if she could go too. I asked her if she was sure, if she wanted to put up with the cold, pain, blisters, exhaustion, hunger (and me!) … beauty, nature, camaraderie and adventure, yes, she was sure. Yea! I am thrilled we are doing this together. Excitement bumped up times 100!
This isn’t our first hiking adventure together. We did a lot of camping as a family when she was younger, and four years ago, when she was 17, we walked across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. For me, the Camino was a great trip, had its own merits, but in the back of my mind was a test to see if I liked long distance walking – for the PCT.
I always thought I would do the trail with my husband, but he is in his second career as a high school math teacher and can’t exactly leave the classroom. I will miss him, but hopefully, he and our son will meet us on the way.
All Journeys Have Secret Destinations Of Which The Traveler Is Unaware
It's all still there in heart and soul. The walk, the hills, the sky, the solitary pain and pleasure - they will grow larger, sweeter, lovelier in the days and years to come.
