Pacific Crest Trail Map

I think I have a ride to Idyllwild tomorrow from Northern Arizona. If it's true, then that is where I'll start hiking the PCT.

Over the years I have done the Rideshare thing on Craigslist many times. And, each time it couldn't have been easier. So smooth. So simple. Hey I'm heading your way, let's split gas costs and do this. It really doesn't have to be a difficult experience.

Someone should tell that to Theodore. That's not his real name, but that's what Shoeless Jon and I started calling him, so that is what we will call him.

Last week I posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a ride to San Diego. Theodore contacted me a few days later, saying he would be passing through on his way from Albuquerque. He said he was on his way to Carlsbad and could drop me off somewhere along the way.

I looked at my maps and decided that Idyllwild would be as good a place as any. It's not the border, but that's okay. I'm heading out to hike. Doesn't really matter where I start or where I end.

The short version of the story with Theodore is that he turned out to be a nutcase. He tried to overcharge me (common practice is to split gas costs, nothing more, nothing less), he wanted to go by way of Phoenix (adding 150 miles to the trip), and he wanted said he'd get to my place at 2pm and wanted to stay the night and get a start the next morning.

Nothing he said or did made sense. When he called me to tell me he was on the way, I had to tell him that I didn't think it was going to work out. I just didn't need the kind of stress he was bringing to the trip. It is no way to start things off.

I would rather hitchhike the 350 miles to Idyllwild than deal with Theodore.

I was fully prepared to do so, but then to friends informed me that they wanted a little adventure this weekend and wanted to make the roadtrip to Idyllwild to drop me off.

I am blessed with great friends. Truly.

Tomorrow we hit the road for Idyllwild. So, tomorrow this little adventure will begin.
