My 1st backpacking trip

A little about me

I hope to keep this journal during my journey to allow family and friends to be a part of my experience and also to have for me in the future. Since this is a public journal (an idea I am still getting used to) I'll share just a little about myself...

I am a 32 year old who is passionate about life, the outdoors and people. I live in the same beautiful town that I have for most all of my life surrounded by most of my family and many great friends. I have been happily married to my high school sweetheart for over seven years and we have owned our first home (in the "mountains" east of our home town) for over nine years. I have been working a great job that I love at a wonderful family owned company for twelve years. I am thankful for all of the amazing people and experiences in my life and I am so grateful that I can follow my dream (as crazy as it may sound to some) to leave it all behind to live and experience 5-6 months of my life this year on the PCT.

I have loved camping my entire life, but I did not take my first backpacking trip until a couple of years ago. My husband (Andrew) and I spent our 5 year wedding anniversary backpacking in the beautiful redwoods of Big Basin State Park in Santa Cruz, CA. Since that trip Andrew has not again chosen to go backpacking (although he seemed to enjoy our trip, he just isn't into backpacking...I am still hopeful he might choose to join me on future trips but needless to say he won't be joining me on the PCT) and I was hooked on backpacking!

I was amazed that I was able to reduce my "needs" to the size of a pack that I could carry on my back and I love the fact that I can travel deeper into the wild. I am still fairly inexperienced but I have learned a lot and taken many short trips; including some solo trips which I was so surprised that I could do and I enjoyed them a lot! I am looking forward to learning more, as I cram down as much info. that I can pre-trip and also while living on the trail.

I am super excited, trying not to focus on my fears and counting on my passion... more about all that later.

Happy Hiking!

Pacific Crest Trail - 2011

It's time to move on, time to get going. What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing. But under my feet, baby, grass is growing. It's time to move on, it's time to get going. ~Tom Petty
