On July 31st, 2006, I retired for the 2nd time and one week later was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. In November 2010 I had my prostate removed and in December 2010 I was diagnosed with throat cancer.
Starting in the spring of 2011, I plan on thru-hiking the 2656 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) ranging in elevation from sea level to 13,200 at Forester Pass. I hope to be about 2000 miles along on this journey when I will celebrate my fifth anniversary of surviving LUNG cancer on Aug 8th, 2011. I will be 68 years of age at that time. For those not familiar with the PCT, it begins at the Mexican border near San Diego and ends at the Canadian border above Seattle.
Beginning April 27th, 2011, I will be making daily entries to this journal in order:
1)For family and friends to be able to follow me during this 2650 mile journey
2)To maintain a record of milestones, unusual events . . . a sharing of the journey
3)To provide a method for 2 way communication for:
. . . a)Meeting with those who might provide support or even hike part of the PCT with me
. . . b)just staying in touch
None of this journey would have been possible without the superb care I have received at MD Anderson (MDA) in Orlando, Florida. My thanks to MDA's Dr Tseng (oncologist) and her incredible staff. My thanks to Dr Harding (primary doctor) for spearheading the initial plan of action and expediting the results of all tests. My thanks to my wife and nephew for pursuing and encouraging me to augment my healing plan with a better diet (including juicing), meditation, mental conditioning and additional vitamins. My thanks to my sons and extended family for their total support and assistance. Finally, my thanks to my wife for being so understanding regarding my desire to make this journey.
So, join me on this adventure. I am dedicating this trek to all those who preceded me in the battle to conquer lung cancer.
