Why Am I Hiking the PCT?
WHY AM I GOING TO HIKE THE PCT?
I expect that I will experience weather that is too cold, too hot, too wet, too dry and too perfect. I will encounter rattle snakes, bears, and maybe even mountain lions in addition to many other animals. The mosquitoes will be horrendous at times, the hills steep, the rocks sharp, the trail blocked, the wind very strong, sleeping occasionally fitful and carrying a back pack with 30+ pounds will be demanding. So remind me again why I am doing this! I could give one of the many cute answers I have heard before and two of my favorites are: . .
1. “If you have to ask, you would not understand” OR . .
2. “We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing."
However, a better answer is that I started power walking marathons in 1999 as a part of my stop smoking plan and have not smoked since. The marathon involvement led to backpacking trips in the great outdoors with hikes in the Sierras each summer. I came to love the Sierras. I came to love backpacking and just being in the great outdoors. To complete a hike of the PCT would :
1. Attain an incredible goal
2. See breathtaking views
3. Experience peace and solitude
4. Simply enjoy Mother Nature
5. Call attention to lung cancer
