Early morning views
Rained off and on all night. Packed up a wet tent, and started out hiking in our rain gear. There was mist in the valleys and on the peaks. Lots of clouds. Within minutes of starting, our shoes were filled with water from the wet vegetation. Good thing we were wearing our soaked socks from the day before!
We had nice views of Deep Lake as we climbed (couldn't see it yesterday in the rain). We topped the ridge then started to drop to the Swift Creek crossing. The trail down was awful...steep, overgrown so we couldn't see our feet, downed trees, narrow with good drop-offs. Took us until almost lunchtime to reach the creek.
This crossing is rated as potentially dangerous. Lots of flow in steep channels. We'd heard several accounts from southbounders about the conditions. We also knew that this late in the season it shouldn't be too bad.
There were actually two channels that were interesting. The first had a small log over rough water or a wade...We waded. The second section had some rocks that made for good footing, followed by a 20 foot scramble up a rock slope to the trail.
We stopped and dried gear a little while we had a quick lunch. The clouds were building again.
Time to go uphill again. Over Deception Pass, along the lakes of the same name, then up and around Surprise Mt. Sometimes the sun would peak out, sometimes the rain would start up.
We ended the day with a drop down a huge talus slope to Glacier Lake.
It started to rain while I was cooking dinner. It was nice to be all set up in camp before the rain hit.
