90 Day Countdown
Here I am, 90 days before my anticipated start date for the PCT, trying to wrap my head around the task ahead. I will be maintaining a more extensive blog http://jamesshimp.blogspot.com/ for friends and family, but I decided I would also register through postholer.com since it has been such a big help during my own planning stages. I figure that maybe my journal here can help future generations of through-hikers, and meanwhile I can get to know the class of 2012 before we all hit the trail.
First and foremost I have not yet pulled the trigger, so to speak, on this hike. I am at a point in life where I need to make a major change in my career path. I have a few applications out there, and if I am offered a good enough job I may have to put off the PCT for the foreseeable future. However, if I have no solid leads by March 1st, I will commit to doing the PCT. Meanwhile, in order to be properly prepared, I am moving forward with the assumption that I will be hiking this year.
A little about my hiking style: I am definitely a solo-hiker. I don't mind the company of others, but I just like maintaining my own schedule without worrying about someone else. Still, I hope to play leapfrog with some other hikers, and share the occasional campsite, which is why I am here! I am a believer in balance and moderation, so I wouldn't classify myself as an ultralight backpacker, though I am also far from plodding along under the weight of an overloaded pack. I'm hoping to range between 20 and 30 miles per day, with most days averaging around 24 miles.
I've been backpacking for about 17 years now, and have hiked in everything from desert to snow. I've carried 20 pound packs and 60 pound packs, on trail and off. I have also been a competitive runner for most of my life (though that has fallen by the wayside recently) so I hope to be well prepared both mentally and physically. For the last 4 years or so i have been wanting to do this hike, so I have read a lot and planned a lot. Unfortunately each year something would come up to prevent me from committing to it. Hopefully 2012 is the year that all of that changes!
