Game Over for This Year

Well my long wait this summer is over. I am not feeling any ill effects from the broken leg, not even that "something" I was worrying about. Instead of going back to the trail and completing more of the PCT this summer, I am following the doctors' recommendations and build up the bone slowly. It seems their timeline for a successful recovery and my plans for a return to hiking were not using the same calendar. The protocol is to increase activity no more than 10% per week. At that rate it would be weeks before I could be doing 20+ miles a day. So I will continue to progress at the suggested rate and start my planning for next year. I will lose my drought year window that made the Sierras easier to cross this year but I will have the opportunity to meet new people with next year's tribe.

This will be the last entry for this year's journal. There is no reason to bore the reader with daily mileage logs or random rants. That is what Facebook is for. (I do not have an account, at least not yet)

A few more random thoughts and daily activities:

I have been riding my bike, walking, or hiking every day. (Activity just feels good) Over the last couple of weeks I have visited old friends. Two that just retired from the BLM down in New Mexico and Helki, one of the guide dogs our family raised was in Colorado with her partner.

Now I must make the transition from extended vacation to a retirement routine. It may be that my routine is a continual vacation with house and family projects interspersed but whatever it is will be a blast. Life is great and mine is improving with every experience I have and every person I meet. (Invest in experiences and not possessions. Memories will always be with you)

Please look for me next year on this website ( I will once again risk failing in a very public way by logging my experiences, thoughts, and travels on the PCT.

I am still a very Luckyman
