Slide at Devils Pk
Devils Peak
See the first through hiker today, Carrot comes by before dawn. Trail is clear with sparse snow patches. Lunch is at Divide Trail junction near Luther Peak and open view to Upper Klamath Valley and Pelican Butte. I meet two more thru hikers on way up to Shale Butte. One is Recycle, who I later catch up with at the Seven Lakes Basin junction. He is trying to avoid all steep snow, so is going to take the Seven Lakes trail out West around Devils Pk and miss the North facing snow slide. I walk with him a bit out on the trail and find it full of snow on the North face too , but passable. Recycle goes down into the trees to get below the snowface and I head back to the PCT. ( I see Recycle much later and he tells me he cut x-country down to South Lake and hit the open trail there). At Devils Peak I see Dan from Corvallis and we walk up the peak trail to the ridgeline and find tons of snow. I watch him later slide down the snow slope on his butt and make a nice stop at the base. I try walking down with my poles, and slip; end up on my rear and sliding down too. Not as gracefull or controlled as Dan, and bark my knuckles on some bare rocks. I decide to try the controlled slide the next steep snow field descent I am faced with.
