Pacific Crest Trail Map

R.I.P., R. Pinky McToenail

It all started with a seemingly innocent trip to the podiatrist to discuss footwear for my fast approaching journey. As an avid marathon runner, I thought my doctor would have good advice about anti-chafe socks and light weight shoes. Once we were past the background information ("Yes, I'm hiking the PCT this year." "That's great! What's your pack weight?") he settled into the examination. Next thing I knew, words like "flat feet" and "osteoarthritis" were flying at me like mean-spirited horse flies that I desperately tried to swat away. I was shocked to learn that the equipment nature gave me for this trip was sub-par to say the least, and perhaps I shouldn't have ignored all of those shin splints during my track running days.

And so began my search for the best shoes to combat these nasty foot "deformities". I knew this would be a difficult search and nothing would be perfect, but I was determined to do my best. Since Straw and I have most of our gear together at this point, we set out last weekend with full packs to test our gear and a new pair of shoes that were up for review. I was so excited about how comfortable my ULA Catalyst pack was and how warm my Marmot dri-climb shirt kept me that it wasn't until mile 5 that I realized something was going awry with my pinky toe, but I disregarded the pain and pushed on. Oh if only I had taken the time to inspect the situation, maybe we would not have suffered the first causality of our hike. But alas, after 15 miles, I realized that not only was I going to have to drive across Austin traffic to return these awful shoes, but we had also lost our dear friend R. Pinky McToenail.

Rest in peace, R. Pinky McToenail. You never even had a chance....

Your friend,

Michelle (trail name TBD)
