Lake Hughes and Desert

shooting for 20

After a pancake and a cup of coffee at the Anderson's, I hopped a shuttle back to the trail at 7:00am. The weather was still beautifully cool, so it seemed like this would be a good day to test my legs, and see what kind of distance they had in them.

I've been concerned about how much "desert" hiking I was going to be getting into on this section hike, but the trail still contains a lot of vegetation, and there are some stunningly beautiful areas along this section of the hike, including some forested areas, where I couldn't help but to sit under a tree here and there to enjoy the shade and cool breeze, and to do a little relaxed reading. There were several views of the desert section that is coming, though it looks to be at least a day or so out.

I was shooting for Sawmill Campground, and probably could have made that, but was still feeling a little bit of chaffing and my feet were telling me to hold off just one more day. The real clincher though was that there was what looked like a really nice open area to camp at the road, and a bunch of thru-hikers was already setting up there, and preparing their dinners (i.e., it was quittin' time!).
