you won't believe what I've been eating

Past the 500 miles point! I've been taking another trail break with family and getting things organized for the next thousand miles! Back on the trail at Neenach tomorrow.
From Wrightwood I went up Mt. Baden-Powell and through the Angeles High Country and down into the Mojave. It was nice to be on my home turf. Averaged over 20 miles a day.

20 plus miles a day takes a lot of calories to sustain- PCT hikers are supposed to eat 2-3 time the average daily recommendation, 4,000- 6,000 calories. All my family and friends know that I'm a super-healthy vegan, ideally tending toward gluten-free and sugar free. I eat mostly fruits and veggies with lots of vegan protein which is ideal for athletic performance and energy. I knew going into the PCT that I was going to have to be less strict about being vegan and that I would eat things with some eggs or dairy in. For instance, walking into Warner after 7 days in the wilderness a young woman jumped out of a car and offered me home-baked chocolate-chip cookies- who could say no? I'm definitely not eating meat though, after 8 years I could be ill to the point of hospitalization- a fairly common fate for long-term vegans that fall off the wagon.

For those who don't know me, let me give you a framework for what I am about to share: I have recurring nightmares about accidently eating a cheeseburger. Enough said.

While on the PCT I walk into town with a voracious appetite and literally eat my way through town. It's pretty stunning the amount of food that I can pack away. In Big Bear where I could get to a grocery store I happily ate a full can of coconut milk (normally enough fat for a week) plus enough groceries for 2 or 3 days. At other places my fare has been even more shocking. The PCT crosses the 15 freeway where there are a bunch of gas stations and fast food places. Since there are no other options for food, you take what you can get. In my desperation for calories I actually ate FRENCH FRIES at MCDONALDS!!!!!! (GASP) Plus all kinds of junk food that you would normally buy at a gas station, burritos at Del Taco. Oh, the vegan shame.

For the next portion I'm going to be sending myself resupply packages with the healthier food that my body needs to function but junk food binges in town are still a strong likelihood.
Would I like fries with that? The answer is yes.
