Pacific Crest Trail Map

In which I come to a profound realization. (Not really.)

Hello again, strangers on the internet; I'm writing here again to discuss something I've been thinking about for several days now. Initially I started this journal for two reasons:

1. Procrastination isn't just a bad habit, it's a way of life. At least for me, it is.

2. Long distance hiking isn't all magical vistas and camaraderie. Sometimes it sucks. Sometimes it's hilarious. Sometimes it's incredibly vulgar (again, let me reiterate: at least for me, it is). So my plan was to unleash it all here. Because as I've mentioned before, I already have a blog. However, it's a blog that I created with the goal of promoting myself (very slowly) as an illustrator/artist. I thought maybe I'd include a pretty picture here and there from my hikes and excursions and leave it at that. Mildly outdoorsy, but no hilarity. And definitely no vulgarity. I felt like I'd be boring my audience... when I wasn't repulsing them.

And so with this as my excuse, and deep in the throes of a pre-hike frenzy of time-wasting and obsession, I started a postholer account.

But I'm learning that it is near impossible for me to keep these two aspects of my life separate. Try as I might, I can't shut up about hiking. And it's been a wildly unproductive year for art making. So I think I'm going to wholeheartedly embrace this and accept it for what it is. If the people reading my blog for the art content don't like it when I start talking about farting, or not bathing, or the many other crude/ridiculous/mundane aspects of hiking... then oh well. I can't present a sanitized version of this hike. Censoring myself was a stupid idea. Dabbling in a roundabout way about something that is going to occupy almost fifty percent of my year makes no sense. My blog is about the things I care about. Clearly, hiking is one of those things. And if sometimes it's an incredibly boring esoteric topic that only other hikers care about... well, in approximately 6 months I can go back to thinking and talking about other subject matter.

What I am getting at in a round-about way is that if you are in the same position I once was, trapped under fluorescent lighting in a cubicle, wishing you could be hiking but reading about it instead, or if you too are trapped in the throes of pre-hike planning yourself... maybe you should check out my blog. Stop by! Say hi. Or just bookmark it and read it if you'd like. Because I'm ditching postholer. I don't really care about documenting mileage and elevation, anyway (Sorry, Postholer... it's the truth!).

Love,

Moss
