May 1st will mark the day I begin my northbound through hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. As one would imagine, I'm pretty stoked to have been blessed with this opportunity. I have always longed to embark on an epic adventure on this kind of scale and finally I will be able to do so. Though excitement has been growing each and every day, it is also accompanied with a bitter sweet feeling because my brother will not be able to join me. We have the same ambitious aspirations and outdoor enthusiasm and have always accomplished arduous trips together. Due to responsibilities however, my brother, Jacob, will have to man the fort at our home. Though still in preliminary discussions, hopefully he will be able to join me for a 2 week section in Oregon.
With that being said, I'm looking forward to the additional challenge of hiking for 4 months solo. It will be interesting to see just how I respond to something of this nature but it should be fun regardless. I do have extensive backpacking experience and a fitness level that should give me an advantage throughout the hike. Jacob and I had an awesome summer last year with 375+ miles in the Sierras, including around 195 miles of the John Muir Trail in 10 days. I will be training in my local mountains throughout the San Bernardino region, working my way up to 30 mile days before my start date.
Until then, I'm going to take advantage of what time I have and utilize it to aid me with my hike and become the first African American to through hike the PCT!
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 2,650-mile national scenic trail that runs from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. The PCT traverses 24 national forests, 37 wilderness areas and 7 national parks. The PCT passes through 6 out of 7 of North Americas ecozones. Learn more: www.pcta.org
