Day 158 Stevens Pass

Arrived Steven Pass at 5 pm. It rained hard all day sleet & snow. The trail was a river with ice floating in it. My hands were frozen. When I got to the trail head parking lot there was a car parked there with two ladies - they were there for a restroom break. Once they saw me they got out of the car & asked all about my hike - they had never heard of the PCT. When they asked how I felt I told them terrible because my hands were too cold to undo my pants to pee. They were very nice and assisted me by unfastening my pants. Close call, I thought I was going to have to wet my drawers! I called Mille & she was enroute with my resupply package but wouldn't arrive for a couple hours so I decided to hitch hike to a town in her direction. Crossing the highway to hitchhike I saw several hikers I knew hiking to down the PCT to the highway back from the north. They told me they were retreating 20 miles because the trail was impassible due to snow! The next section summits several 6,000 + ridges and they had encountered deep snow before 5,000 ft. They invited me to join them at the coffee house - I hadn't noticed one - and since I was having no luck getting a ride & freezing my hiney I joined them. Got some food at the coffee house and warmed up until Millie arrived. Made two round trips to the Dinsmores Hiker Haven with a car load of hikers. Shady Acres, Solstice etc. Each trip was 47 miles round trip - and it was dark in bad weather. Since I live about 3 hours from Stevens Pass and the weather forecast was for a lot more snow I went home.
