Took this shot on the Rez. One of those special places for me.

Why I Walk

Beauty Way Ceremony

In beauty may I walk

All day long may I walk

Through the returning seasons may I walk

Beautifully I will possess again

Beautifully birds

Beautifully joyful birds

On the trail marked with pollen may I walk

With grasshoppers about my feet may I walk

With dew about my feet may I walk

With beauty may I walk

With beauty before me may I walk

With beauty behind me may I walk

With beauty above me may I walk

With beauty all around me may I walk

In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk

In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, live again, may I walk

It is finished in beauty

It is finished in beauty

This is a reason why I walk. Every element, every word of this ceremony has a purpose. Your understanding of these words will differ from mine, from the Navajo, as it should. Texts don’t exist for the purpose of carrying a homogenous meaning, that’s the beauty of them.

I share this Beauty Way Ceremony for many reasons. Above all, because its essence is intertwined with a vital relationship I’ve had in my life with my former partner. I’m fortunate to have had her by my side for almost half of my life. We shared a friendship, a marriage, and continue to hold an unconditional love for one another. As a Navajo woman, she taught me hozho. In its simplest form, hozho can be interpreted as balance. Hozho can also be perceived as how the universe coincides with everything that forms a part of it. I relate hozho to a life balance, it’s a world view I have gained, and I try to maintain. The first time I heard the Blessing Way recited, my mentor, whom I barely knew at the time, shared it with us before we began to walk. I knew hozho existed before then, but it being narrated to us in that specific moment was and is a reference point of achieving significant balance for me. I didn’t know it then, but I stood there accompanied by two of the most influential women in my life (my mother wasn’t present at the time ;) That’s how I have come to understand hozho, and always ask to walk the beauty way.

Walk in beauty.

One morning in Yosemite, I wrote down this Beauty Way Ceremony on the back of a trail map for a thru hiker duo, Class of 2011. If you’re out there, Hi J
