Journal Entry

Sept 15 2007, 2 miles north of Snoqualmie pass: Two hikers quickly pack up their camp not far from the snoq. pass parking lot, fill up on water at the nearby stream and start off up the trail. We are up early and moving pretty fast as we approach an older gentleman coming down. "You fellas going all the way?" he quips, his face in a smile as if he knows ALOT more than we do about some unknown subject. We look at each other for a second, not really sure how to reply. My friend says no, no, and the nice man looks down at the ground as we exchange plesantries. I then ask my friend, thats right, doesnt this trai go all the way to Oregon? (lol) "yeah" he says, all the way to crater lake or something..(I think he was thinking of the cascade crest trail). -----That was my "introduction" to the Pacific Crest Trail. My focus on mountaineering and other things super macho never gave me the idea that a whole summer of continous walking could be had, traipsing through some of the best kept wildlands in America, meeting some pretty fun people, and being part of nature. But my life couldn't fit that kind of nonsense, I had to make alot of money, workout every day and impress others!! Well a few life lessons later I was searching for something for ME. I no longer cared what others thought and I had all the time in the world to devote to hiking. After finding out the real facts about the pct it was unreal to me. $ 4000 to put up, 20 miles or more EVERY day, a bunch of specialized gear. It seemed impossible. And thats why I latched on. I am a person who does not doubt himself, at all. I have learned through my years of outdoor sports that the Human body is strangely out of place on all this comcrete, with all these fat-saturated foods. We are capable of soo much more than alot of us think.
