Lost My Brains - Run!

Sleeping in the clouds
Sprinkling rain on me at night
Warm shower renew

Drip, drip, sprinkle, sprinkle. Those were the first sounds of my day just after midnight. Quite possibly one of the dumbest things I've ever done. There I laid, cowboy camped without my tent setup. I pulled my tent over the top of me in hopes that it would be enough. But those drips and sprinkles did not abate and the next hours were tortuous. Temps were easily in the high 30s. Despite my makeshift cover, my bag became slightly damp and as 4 am approached I felt the chills creeping in. I decided to wait until first light and then pack up and head out. My hands became instantly frozen from the moisture on everything and for the life of me I could not get my tent back in its stuff stack. I ended up just dumping it into my pack along with my wet sleeping bag and making a run for it.

Bone Head Move #2. I could not bring myself to remove my long johns which I always keep dry for sleeping. So I headed down the trail wearing them as one of many layers. The pelting rain soon dampened them but at least I was warm enough. My only rational for doing this was that I was headed to town. My Tyvek rain jacket which I was wearing for the first time, worked pretty good. Nice and warm.

After running down the Devils Slide Trail I was still over 2 miles from town. There were 5 other hikers huddled next to the parking lot bathrooms. Gotta love hiker trash. We started walking to town but soon caught a ride from the owner of Idyllwild Inn. There was already a line at the door of the inn with people all wanting rooms. I was lucky enough to get a cabin and found 2 other hikers to split it with. With clothes dampened and butt soaking wet, a large group of us headed to the coffee shop next door to wait the 4 hours until our rooms would be ready. I got a hot chocolate and played scrabble with Saggitar, Veggie, Track Meat and Spark. Then I got caught up on some journals which I hadn't done due to the cold. I just might have left a wet butt stain on the cushy chair.

Beer, shower, warm clothes. All was right again in the world. The rain continued throughout most of the day. Here tonight with Sensai and Sour Cream. Fun crew plus visiting with our cabin neighbors through or shared door. Pizza and beer dinner. What glorious trail talk.

Just might take a zero here tomorrow. Idyllwild is awesome. I've hiked 180 miles in 9 trail days. Not a bad start. A zero is when I don't hike any miles. Today was a nero with just a few trail miles logged.
