I've been thinking a lot about athletes since starting this trip. As you know, I'm signed up with Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation to assist with some pika research. "ASC's primary initiative is to facilitate partnerships between adventure athletes and researchers." Does that make me an adventure athlete? I've never thought about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in this way before. Well duh, it's the ultimate long distance endurance sport. To put it in perspective, more people have summited Mt. Everest than have completed a thru-hike of the PCT!

About 10 miles in from the border on that very first day of trail, I also found myself thinking about how I'd always been interested in participating in the Olympics. Perhaps the PCT is my Olympics. Interestingly, I seem to be obsessed with associating myself with "Olympic-like" events. Back in 2002, I was quoted in the Sacramento Bee referencing my then upcoming National Wind Ensemble Carnegie Hall performance being like the Olympics for musicians. Hmmmm.... And wouldn't you know it, it's been 4 years since my last PCT hike.

Lucky for me, I had a beer to match the gale force winds outside today. Twister proof double-wide IPA. And because I know all of you are on the edge of your seats with wonder, I'm 100 pages into vampire book #3.

Watched the Life of Pi. Cool movie with awesome music.
