Fire Watchin'

Billowing smoke plumes
Hitching around the fire
Aqueduct camping

Cowboy camped and awoke to ash covering me and all my stuff. Sleep was so so as G Dub had put scary thoughts of biting ants into my head. Not to mention the gusting wind and smell of smoke most of the night. Due to poor sleep, I didn't rise until 7 am. Made my way to the pancake breakfast. Only ate two giant pancakes due to last nights taco salad gorge.

About 11 am new, big clouds of smoke erupted. The fire spread north and the PCT was officially closed. There was talk of possibly rides up to hiker town. Some do not want to skip the miles. More hikers roll in by the minute.

Finally, a few rides rolled out towards hiker town, 40 trail miles ahead. After catching a connecting ride, we saw lots of helicopters puling water out of lake Hughes. Pretty amazing. And seeing the plume from the opposite side made it look 10 times bigger.

At hiker town Orbit, Rocks, G Dub, Doc, Porsha and I readied our packs and were on trail by 730 pm. The long exposed aqueduct walk is best done at night. I almost got taken out by a tumble weed gusting by in the forceful wind.Beautifully cool hiking weather tonight. Fireworks around 11 pm off in the distance. All of us camped here atop a water container.

p.s. A Jeep went zipping by near 1 am. Kinda scary. Good thing we didn't camp in the road.
