tunes bump while ravers dip
Five circles of hell
Unique quail covey alert
Thump thump goes the bass
Made good early miles despite the climb and the heat. Braked for lunch at a spring with a boy scout crew. It wasn't until I was leaving that they asked where I had gotten on trail. So I explained the whole thing. Not sure that they got it. I was surprised.
Not long after lunch, I literally stumbled upon a covey of quail. Baby quail were flying out from under my feet. Mama quail went ape shit. She started making a call I'd never heard before and she made a full circle around me rounding up her babies. I called out, it's ok mama but then I remembered she didn't understand. Once she was satisfied that all her babies were safe, she slowly made her way towards her covey which had scampered off.
4100 feet of descent is close to at least 5 circles of hell especially when you descend into triple digit heat. When I was about 4 miles out, I could hear the undeniable thump of rave bass. It turns out Belden is rave central this weekend. I walked into the party for free. Small price to pay for walking all the way from Mexico. Because I was ahead of schedule, I stopped in the bar and got a beer. My trail angel mom, who was going to meet me, couldn't get into the gig so I sat on the bar porch and waited until I saw her drive up.
We checked out the trail angel place but wimped out because of the heat. Oh, and did I mention the train that rumbles by every so often? So, we headed east to Quincy where we managed to get an air conditioned room sans mosquitos plus a pizza dinner.
Content and happy to be cool.
