house going up in flames

Welcome To Tuesday

About 430 am Rhymenoceros burst into the hiker hut and told the 4 of us that we had 30 minutes to pack our stuff. Fire! Fire! Of course the first thought was of the surrounding forest fires. We looked out the window and the flames were huge and engulfing what appeared to be the house next door. After the group panic subsided slightly, we realized that it was actually a structure fire several houses down the street. After it became apparent that we weren't eminently evacuating, I laid back down in bed. Since everyone was up, we finished watching Hook and then folks went to breakfast around 545 am.

Not me. I stayed in bed. My arm was killing. Didn't even feel like eating. Lady Killer said later that you know something is wrong when a thru-hiker doesn't go to breakfast.

I went back to the clinic at 9 am to see if they could do something for my increasingly painful wrist. A beta-dine soak and antibiotic injection later, it seemed I felt a little better.

I went back to the hiker hut and finally ate something. I worked a little on sorting my backpack and then relaxed in bed. Got word that someone had gone back into the flaming house for the cat and neither of them made it out. Very sad. And lots of speculation in town about the "hippie" or "meth" house and causes of the fire.

Lots of talk also about the fire near the trail in the marble mountains. As of this morning it was within 5 miles of the pct. This afternoon they even closed Sawyers Bar Road at Etna summit, the road I hitched on into Etna.

Brewery time with Toots Magoots, Tears For Beers and Aloha. Next stop, the old soda fountain for ice cream. At least 30 hikers here for the night again. Fun social time takes my mind off my still hurting wrist. No more fires yet.....
