Monument 78

My entry in the monument register: 7 years ago today I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and finally here I stand at this monument after logging over 4400 miles on the PCT. Thank you to the PCT for changing my life and bringing all these wonderful people into it.

The day started by checking in on the digital pct world. People getting stopped due to government shutdown, missing hikers, and Toots and Tears were on their way to Manning Park to hike to the monument. Canadoug and I went to breakfast and were keeping our eye out for the pickle jar (Aloha's car). As we were finishing breakfast I saw Aloha drive up but I could tell he didn't have any passengers. I bolted out and he said he'd just dropped them at the trail head. Luckily, the night before I'd readied my backpack for the trip. Canadoug zipped me down to the trail head and I was on my way by 1030 am.

I caught them just over half way there. I was surprised that when I arrived at the monument I was quite calm. I really thought that I would have tears. Tears of joy. Tears of sadness. Overall, I was just so happy to finally reach this illusive destination and be sharing it with such kindred spirits. Pictures. Cheers. Hugs. Congratulations.

It was starting to get cold and we still had the 8 miles back to Manning Park. 3 hours later we arrived at the trailhead where we found Canadoug who had hot coffee with Irish cream and hot dogs for us. With no sign of the pickle jar, we headed to the lodge for some dinner and celebratory beer. With a still illusive Aloha, Toots and Tears came back to our room where Canadoug told us the hilarious story about the grass growing under his toe nail. A perfect way to celebrate my last night with these fine folks.
