Gear before the great sorting

Choosing a pack

I am at home today with tendon pain down the back of my legs. I feel like being useful, if I can't be hiking today. I accomplished the most major shakedown to date of my pack. Saying good buy to a lot of clothing weight and the kindle. If my phone can't keep a charge with the solar charger, then I don't need the solar charger either. And I should be able to put all of the books I want on my phone. I am glad I am trying on my pack with the new leg pain. I keep hearing how you have to learn to live with pain along the trail.

The other thing that is a pain is choosing a pack. I have my old and trusted backpacking companion, the Gregory Deva 60 L. Love this pack, even at 5.5 pounds! I love Gregory. I also have the ULA Circuit. It is O.K.. I like the design of the pockets, but I am not convinced that I wont have shoulder pain due to the lack of suspension. I keep packing my gear in one and then the other and walking around, stepping on and off the scale. There is a drought this year and I want to be happy carrying all the water I need. I know I can do that with the Gregory. I am uncertain about the ULA. My base weight is between 15 and 18 pounds. Still undecided. This has been the hardest gear decision for me. The rest were all decided easily by price or quality. To be continued....

I can't wait to be out there, so I can just walk and rest and eat and sleep. I have been consumed with thinking about all of those things. I have tried to predict amounts and quality of each. I'm ready to go.
