Anza-Borrego State Park

Six of us thru-hikers leapfrogged each other today throughout the course of a long, hot, dry, and rocky nine hours of hiking. Knowing companions were near was a comfort as this section was unforgivingly exposed. Starting just after sunrise, we looked down on green hills painted with light blue flowers, bobbing heads of hikers further along the ridge barely visible. We quickly moved from a lush and blooming desert to dry scree fields with scattered cactuses. As the surroundings became increasingly harsh, we stopped seeing the now common lizards, snakes, rabbits, and songbirds. In the words of my new buddy Rod, "everything here will either poke you or poison you". Tomorrow brings more of the same as we head into the San Felipe Hills.
