Five Lakes Creek to Benson Hut
Another day of fantastic views, strong wind and of course, a couple of climbs. It was challenging to stay upright as the winds increased in the afternoon. Available places to camp were not very conveniently located today. There were several nice ones that came too soon and after that, our information showed nothing within our daily hiking range. Not wanting to stop at 2:00 or 3:00, we decided to take a chance on being able to find something suitable. Suitable is relative. Any two somewhat sheltered, body sized flat spots would work so we were hopeful.
Later in the afternoon, we chatted with some southbound hikers who gave us directions to the Benson Hut, a Sierra Club ski hut. We were aware of it's existence, but didn't know exactly where it was. It is off trail and cannot be seen from the trail. As the afternoon and early evening progressed, we did not find any place to camp. Wind was still very strong, so we decided to try and find the hut. Of course, the directions we received a few hours before had become a bit fuzzy. Donna remembered some parts and I remembered others and together we were able to locate the hut.
It was a blessed relief to get out of the wind. The hut was rustic and we were the only ones there, except for a rodent or two. So happy to have a solid shelter for the night.
