Jakes Saloon in Lone Pine

Nero to Lone Pine

Well, near-zero (nero) 2.8 miles to Whitney Portal. Very windy night last night, but not as windy as Tyler Horse Creek, and not as cold as it has been (water bottles didn't freeze).

Easy cruise to the Portal, and I was there by 8 AM. But the Portal Store didn't open until 9. But Doug Jr. Got there about 8:30 to open, and he let me get a shower. Heavenly, after almost a week and a half. Then, a Portal Pancake, which is the size of two dinner plates! I could only eat half, leaving the rest for snacking. While I was waiting for the store to open, I met two hikers who were getting their pancakes and then going in to Shepherd's Pass. They gave me a ride to Lone Pine. My first stop was the laundromat, where I proceeded to wash every piece of clothing I had (I wore my sleeping bag liner during this process). And then a brief walk in downtown Lone Pine, check into the hostel, and talking trail with other hikers.

So my section ("chunk" as Yogi put it) is over, and it was a good section. 460 miles or so, in three weeks. Through the desert and its austere beauty, the dry Transverse Ranges, trail angels and much-appreciated magic. It has been a good hike.
