Day 1

Great first day. A huge thank you to Scout and Frodo, who are two trail angels based in San Diego that hosted me and 4 other hikers last night at their home and coordinated a ride for us to the border this morning. Scout and Frodo hiked the PCT in 2007, and now host more than 100 hikers every year. They are incredible people, so welcoming and selfless.

I barely slept last night, and had major butterflies on the ride out. We left their house this morning at 6, and were at the trailhead on the border as the sun came up around 7. I spent most of the day hiking with two of the other passengers, Sean and Shadowfax. Sean was a combat medic in Iraq and Shadowfax is a hot air balloon pilot from Scotland who hiked the trail last year, very interesting guys.

The trail had much more elevation than I expected and was mostly chaparral. Very beautiful. Sunny all day, but there was an ocean breeze that kept the temperature tolerable. Water was an issue though, there weren't any sources for about 18 miles.

So far so good though, no blisters and my legs feel strong. I've fallen deeply in love with Snickers, need to slow my roll or I'll be out of them before Warner Springs.

We're supposed to get rain tomorrow, but I'm hoping to get another 20 miles in to get within striking distance of Mt Laguna.
