Thoughts on my visit to the local gear shop

It's time to update some of my gear. I am not a person that needs (or wants) to have the latest gadgets. I like to keep using what has worked well for me until it doesn't. Make sense? I've done a lot of backpacking over the years but not a lot of long or thru hikes. This summer I completed a walk across Washington state, going from east to west and am intrigued to walk from south to north in 2014. Believe it or not, I did the entire east/west hike in my low-cut rubber bogs. A few folks were aghast....didn't your feet get so hot? Well, they probably did, but I didn't think about it; I was too busy enjoying the scenery and the joy and wonder I feel when "out there". Long story short, I am not going to wear bogs on the upcoming hike, I want something much lighter for the PCT. I liked the feel of those Oboz sawtooth womens shoes but need to keep trying on shoes until I find the one I can't live without. Also, it's time to get a lighter water filter so I sprang for the MSR lightweight Hyperflow. Got home and read the reviews and now I'm thinking I need to take it back and find something more dependable. The reviews aren't too positive. So, I can see I have my work cut out for me. Hope I'm ready when August rolls around.

It's great to think about the walk. Also, looking forward to meeting all the interesting characters that will be on the trail.
