Pacific Crest Trail Map

The trip down the 101

I rode my single speed bike nearly 300 miles down the Oregon Coast. From Tillamook to Brookings. But I decided that was enough of a bike tour for me and for various reasons I left it chained to a post in a state park (to be picked up in two weeks by my wonderful friends).

I then started the next leg of my journey, hitch-hiking down the 101. I walked for six miles before getting a ride into California and was left at a cross roads south of Crescent City. Only ten cars passed me in what seemed like twenty minutes so I started walking again. I hadn't gone a quarter mile before coming across a sign that read, "Narrow shoulder next ten miles."
I then walked back a ways, sat on my pack and started to eat a granola bar. Before long there was a line of four or five cars coming my way. I sat there with my thumb out as they all passed me by. All except the last car.
"Where are you trying to get to?" asked the woman in the passenger seat.

"Ultimately San Francisco but for now just anywhere south of here." I replied

"Great, that is where we are going, hop in. My name is Andy." she said with a warm smile.

The man in the driver's seat was named Dan and over the next several hours I learned that Dan and Andy had done a great deal of travelling in there life. I heard short glimpses of stories that placed them in New Zealand, Australia, China, South Africa, Kenya, Cuba, Mexico and many more that I do not recall. These wonderful people gave me a ride all the way down to San Francisco and dropped me off at the southern terminus of Hwy 1 the following morning.
Already much has happened in the day I have spent just North of San Francisco.

I got a ride up to Muir Woods and hiked around in the redwoods for a few miles before hitching a ride back down to Mill Valley. I stayed with the couch surfing hosts that gave me a ride to the Muir Woods and spent the night conversing with a Voice Actor/Entrepreneur named Bekka and an incredibly brilliant Artificial Intelligence Scientist/Mathematician/Humanitarian superhero genius named Justin.

All in a days work for the life of the traveler.
