Useful stuff in my pack

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. (Mao?)

Feet are my friend. Or my enemy. I want to be friends, so:

Lightweight trail running shoes, well ventilated and not waterproof. In my case, Brooks Cascadia. Add a thin gel insole and custom orthodics. On my feet, Injinji toe socks and leukotape help prevent blisters. I used Dirty Girl gaitors last year and think they helped keep chunks of sand/rock out of my shoes. Sand and grit move freely into the well ventilated shoes, not a problem once I had the right socks and tape on my feet. This year I will try Trail Toes and Hike Goo. Each is a lubricant cream to help prevent chafe and blisters. (This goo may also help other chafe points like where my pack rubs.)

Last year, in my short experience, I lost the toe nails from both "pinky" toes. I was blistered up before Julian (mile 77). Some kind sole turned me on to the injinji socks and and leukotape, which was amazingly helpful. (I was able to leave the leukotape on for days, even showering etc. It breaths and dries and really protects. There may be other equivalent products but I don't plan to try them. No need. I'm sold.)

The foot creams will be new for me. I will try each of two competitors and see which I like.
