Day 79

On the trail at 0850. Latest start yet. Because town is a 2 day hike no matter how you split it, I took an easy day today. Then lunch was just about over and it started storming. A 45 minute lunch turned into a 2+ hour event. Storms threatened the rest of the day so I picked a pretty little lake and plopped down after only 15 miles. Same distance tomorrow with only a third of the climbing.

The mosquitoes at camp yesterday were the worst yet. This morning was no better. Tonight they're not too bad. We heard explosions last night and early this morning too. Probably military. They came from the east.

The sunset was a nice one tonight. A storm off to the east was lit up nicely and then reflected in the lake. I took several pictures.

Today I saw Beekeeper, Irene, Risky Biscuit and Cold Bear, Jud, Crazy Lamb and Goldenrod. I hiked a couple miles with Risky Biscuit and Cold Bear this morning and determined that they're awesome people.

Oh, so Jud and I stopped for lunch at a lake and heard something. It was something very weird. It sounded almost mechanical and it was very loud and lasted about 20 seconds. It came from the south and it was unlike anything I've heard before. Ever. It sounded like there was a rip in the space/time continuum. Like a worm hole opened and closed, maybe. It was super freaky. Jud and I were speechless. There was a curving ridge to the south leading away from us and the only thing we can imagine it was is a rock slide. But it didn't sound like a rock slide in the least. Ok, moving on. (I'm not crazy, I swear)

Irene and Crazy Lamb and Goldenrod got caught on the ridge during the storm. They got quite a bit of hail and they were pelted pretty hard.

I had the best meal tonight. It was Mountain House dehydrated breakfast scramble and I heated up tortillas and made breakfast burritos. They were SO good. OH! I got some nice trail magic today. There was a dirt road and an Excursion drove by. They stopped and asked where I started and where I was going. I got the rock star treatment and got 2 beers and a Mountain Dew from them. THEN Jud cooked cobbler under a tree while we waited out the storm. Beer and cobbler. A good day.
