Sierraish mountains!
It's beginning to look a lot like the Sierra
Well, I did end up hitching to Lake Isabella with another hiker. Two factors made the decision easier: I didn't have enough food to get to Kennedy Meadows, the next resupply, and it was about to rain. We quickly covered 11 miles to Hwy 178 and got a ride from the first truck that came down. Interesting ride too. The guy was involved in "dynamic sailing" model aircraft. What they do is wait to get high- speed winds, like 60 to 80 mph, and see how fast their planes fly. Incredibly, the record is 505 mph! The ride back today was cool too. From an incredulous CHP officer who told us we couldn't hitch the highway. He had never heard of the PCT and when we told him about it he had us crawl into the back seat for a ride about half way to the trailhead and a better spot to hitch. If you've never been in a cruiser, there's not much room in the back. Think my Mini Cooper has more space. Finished the ride with a nice woman who was on the phone with her husband, whom I'd just asked for a ride at a gas station. Yay!
