Why I'm hiking the PCT

A lot of people ask me, "why are you hiking the PCT? Is it because you watched the movie Wild?" The answer is... No.
I have wanted to hike the PCT since I was in the Boy Scouts in the '70's. We hiked from Kennedy meadows to Clover meadows. Well, we were suppose to! About 1 mile into the trail, for some reason I don't remember, we needed to back for the rest of the supplies. One of the other Boy Scouts, I can't remember his name right now, said he new the trail to Clover Meadows. So, half of us went back to get the rest of the supplies and the other half kept going.
We got the supplies and started hiking back along the PCT. about 2 miles in we needed to ford the Kern river to get across the trail. (The bridge that exist now wasn't built till the 80's.) the Scout that said he knew the way didn't. He just figured the path was so obvious that it would that way the whole time. Well, we never forded the river and just kept going. Eventually, the trail we were following disappeared. We just kept going until it started to get dark. We realized at that point we were lost. It was only a five mile hike and we had walked 5 or 6 hours.
We decided to make camp. We built a fire, for warmth and signal. Mark, I just remembered the scouts name, was to take first watch and keep the fire going. We woke the next morning and Mark had fallen asleep, letting the fire go out.
We decided we would just follow the Kern River back downstream and eventually we would reach Kennedy meadows. About 4 or 5 hours search and rescue came walking up and asked if we were okay. We said we were fine and were just following the river back out. Apparently they were searching for us all night and morning. The next day our local newspaper, in the town of Ridgecrest were I grew up, read, " Lost Boy Scouts weren't lost!"

I always said someday I would hike the whole trail. I just celebrated my 50th birthday and about 2 or 3 months ago I decided to do it. I realized that I was running out of "somedays."

That is one reason I have decided to hike the trail! Stay tuned for the next blog and I will give reason number 2!!!
