I am not very good at hiking

All right, time for a confession. I'm actually not very good at hiking.

The PCT isn't a very complex affair. You start at the Mexican border in California, then walk north through Oregon and Washington to get to Canada. Yet at times I've found myself walking every which way, and I even came across a "Welcome to Nevada" sign while gathering supplies off trail in the town of South Lake Tahoe.

This isn't like the AT, where I would need to memorize a list of 13 different states to be completely sure that that was a bad sign. This is the PCT, which goes through just three states, and Nevada isn't one of them. I may need to work on my navigational skills...

Slightly more seriously, while I've done all right at navigating, and about the same at the basic skill of putting one foot in front of the other, I am bad at some parts of hiking. I'm one of the few hikers on the trail who has become *less* of a morning person since starting. For most people, having the light of sunrise on your face and the sounds of wildlife waking up are enough to get one started in the morning, but for me sleep is time to repair, and the outside world is cold :P

Also, in ordinary life, I tend to rely on routines to stay organized. Now, not staying in the same place two nights in a row, routines are pretty much out the window, and it shows in how often I misplace gear. So far I've lost the following:

My tent (left 1.5 miles back, returned for)
Charger and external battery
Like 4 USB charging cables, all separate occasions
Like 6 water bottles, all separate occasions
A debit card, returned for and found
My driver's license, returned for and found
My credit card, cancelled
My sleeping pad, left 1.25 miles back up a really steep hill, but grudgingly returned for
My windbreaker, left 15 miles back up and down a quite steep ridge, not returned for
My phone, returned for and found at least twice
A flashlight, after me tripping and it (but thankfully not me) rolling down a steep hill

Thank god I don't carry trekking poles, or I'd have to replace those every 50 miles :P
