Vancouver

Vancouver

The two thru hikers from Hopkins Lake turned into instant friends as we walked the last mile or so into Manning Park Lodge. We had lunch and dinner together, did laundry together, rode the bus to Vancouver and wandered around town after our early morning arrival, enjoyed a great brunch, exchanged contact info and then said good-byes as we set off in search of our lodgings.

Catching up on a few statistics, as of today, the PCTA website says 4,171 people have completed the PCT (either in a thru hike or in sections). Meanwhile the Ms. Elizabeth Hawley Himalayan Database reports 7,001 summits of Mount Everest through August 2015. Clearly hiking the PCT is less risky and not as glamorous. Which is more difficult? I wouldn't know. But on Mount Everest, you can hire a Sherpa to short-rope you to the summit. Good luck trying that on the PCT!

So what does it feel like to finish? Well it's done. That is probably the most important feeling at the moment. The planning for this adventure started almost four years ago, so it needs to be done. I would say each of the three trip segments was completely different. I had no idea what to expect the first half and it was definitely an adventure. The intervening time had allowed the previous experience to mature and I felt completely comfortable on the second half. And in this last segment I was pleasantly surprised to find how easy it was to jump back to big miles and how enjoyable to be able to spend all day strolling through mile after mile of God's beautiful country.

What a treasure, no I think a gift, we have.
