Gear Thoughts
So I have almost all major equipment selected/purchased. Most of the major items (tent/bag/pack) will be what I used on my section hike last year. It all worked well and will keep it:
Bag/Sack: Bert's old Marmot Sleeping bag - 34 oz
Tent: Tarptent Notch - 27 oz
Pack: Osprey Exos 58 (top part removed) 34 oz.
I am replacing my old Thermarest self-inflating pad (16 oz) with a Thermarest ZSol Lite (small) ata 10 oz.
Have trimmed some clothes weight. Will be leaving my capilene long sleeve light out for the desert section. Still debting this though.
On electronics I have (after long debte) changed my approach. Last year I took a sCharger5 (8.5 oz) solar panel and a small Anker external battery to keep my IP5 up and running (I used Guthooks navigation app). This worked well but after doing some more research I have elected to just go with two small external batteries (5200 mAh, 4.2 oz each) to keep my IP6 charged. This will save a little more weight. I will keep my folding BT keyboard (6 oz! But I love this think), otherwise I would have to give up on the whole bloggin thing. I am NOT taking paper maps. This is a real hassle and involves lots of mailing and I never once looked at them last year. I MAY take a tiny Ereader I got on Ebay for $ 30, a KOBO Mini (4.4 oz) with Halfmile maps and Yogi's town guide loaded as backup for my IPhone. Still debating this. Electrnics is definitely the area I am the most up in the air about.
Here is a summary comparing current weights with last year:
