Ed and Carl enjoying trail magic sodas

Smoke and (Trail) Magic

During the night some smoke drifted to where we were camped, nothing heavy but sort of irritated my throat. But in the dark of night there's nothing to be done, and it wasn't too bad in the morning.

Again not too much to say about the day, other than it started out warm and got warmer as we hiked lower into the afternoon. At our high point for the day someone had left a couple of coolers full of cans of soda for hikers, and that was nice. Surprise treats of various sorts are referred to in trail parlance as "trail magic".

After lunch about noon I parted from Ed and Carl as I tend to walk faster down hill. I hiked hard and got to our end point, Callahan's Lodge, at 3:15. This was our end point as when Ed and I finished a stretch in Oregon another year, Callahan's is where we finished that trip.

Ann met me there shortly after and drove me to our motel to clean up, then when Ed and Carl called about 5 pm, we drove to pick them up. Everyone was feeling great until the smoke we were seeing turned out to be a car fire, leaving us parked on I-5 in 100 degree weather for nearly an hour, about a mile from our motel. Such are the breaks sometimes.

Anyway, we're finished with this trip now. We'll see a couple of sights in Oregon on the way home, and continue to enjoy the company of Carl and Ed until they fly home.
