Deadfall Lake

A day with Mt Shasta

What a great day for hiking! The temperature was comfortable this morning. No need for a "puffy" today. The terrain was gentle, too. For the most part, it rolled up and down, but some areas were actually flat! That's very unusual.

We didn't stop and talk with any through-hikers today, although we saw a number of them this morning, all walking with purpose. One young woman (her greeting sounded German) had a large pine cone strapped to the top of her backpack. The cone was longer than her pack was wide. I wish I'd thought quick enough to snap a picture after she walked by, but I didn't. It was too early in the day.

The trail took us around some large bowls. I'm sure glad the engineers didn't make us climb down one side and the back up the other.

For the second day, the vegetation was sparse. We were able to look across the bowls we were hiking around and see where we'd been or where we were going. We were also able to enjoy multiple views of Mt Shasta and even saw Mt Lassen in the distance.

We also saw several lakes today. We stopped at the upper Deadfall Lake for lunch. It was a bit windy but beautiful. We could have avoided the wind if only we'd gone to the lower lake. Oh well.

We took our afternoon break as we enjoyed looking down on Toad Lake with Mt Shasta in the background. A few miles later, we pitched our tents on a ridgetop, again looking at Mt Shasta. Things could definitely be worse.
