My buddy Russ

Day 15 I-10 (M-209.5)

I had a great night sleep. Although the wind was blowing I had my earplugs on and slept right through the noise. Two people camped near me last night, Kevin and Lori. Kevin hiked 2000 miles of the PCT last year and this is Loris first. Todays hike was down, down, down, I dropped 4500 feet of elevation. It took 16 miles to do it so there was a lot of meandering. Its not like the hike Id take my fire crew on for training. We called that Hobos Canyon and it dropped 2400 in 1.7 miles. I called that the three day hike, because your legs hurt for three days after. I passed the 200 mile marker today only about 2450 trail miles to go. I had heard there was a bee hive near mile 202 but I wasnt sure where. I let others know about it but there were two guys ahead of me I didnt get to warn. In that area I was watching them hike from across the drainage and saw the second guy start flailing his arms about and start running. I guess he found it. When I got there I put on my down jacket and mosquito head net and then ran through as fast as I could. I could hear them buzzing and a few chased me but no stings. I arrived at my meeting place with Russ at about 2:00 so I hung out till he got there. Did I mention that it was another WINDY day? Russ picked me up and we went to his desert house at the Salton Sea. We talk about family friends and some old times. Had steak, potatoes and beer. It was a great visit. He wants to hike a few days with me later so were going to try to make it work.
