Two fires ahead

Day 128 Grizzly Peak

The train came through at 11:00 and 4:00. The bad part was that there is a road crossing in town so the conductor has to blow the whistle. I was able to return to sleep quickly. I even slept in till 7:00 this morning. The Post Office didnt open till 11:30 so I was relaxed in my room catching up on my blogs and researching my next section. There is a fire closure ahead but there is a trail detour set up to get around it. Its going to add about 10 miles to Stehekin and then because Im a stickler for my footprints all the way another 7 miles when I head out of Stehekin. I have another Post Office issue coming up because the one in Stehekin is open on Saturday till 2:00 and if I dont make it by then Ill have to wait until Monday to get my package. If I go for it (and we all know Im going to) I may have to hike some 30s in the next few days. Anyway back to today... I checked out of my room but was able to leave my pack in the hikers lounge area and headed off to lunch. I had a pastrami Ruben and got another sandwich to go for my second lunch later on trail. It was a good thing I went in the cafe early because a long line formed as I was eating. I walked to the post office and it opened just after I arrived. I took my box of food back to the hotel and organize it and packed up. I still had some things to do on my phone so I sat down with the other hikers and finished up. The hiker I met the other night, Up Hill came in as I was about to leave. I walked to the highway and started trying to hitch a ride. About 30 minutes passed and the owner of the cafe opened a windows and yelled to me to come over. He handed me a sign they have that says, PCT hiker needs ride to Stevens Pass. He said to bring it back when I got my ride. I wasnt back out there more than 5 minutes and a guy pulls over. As I loaded my pack another hiker I just met today came running up to see if he could get a ride too. The driver is traveling home to Montana and had passed by but then came back to pick me up. He works in Yellow Stone park and used to work in Yosemite. He dropped us off and I went into the Stevens Pass ski lodge to have a soda and make some phone calls before I took off. I called and talked to Lynn, my Mom and cousin Alan. At 2:00 I finally hit the trail. The most surprising thing was that I started off going downhill. I dont think that has ever happened when leaving a resupply before. It only lasted for a few miles before turning uphill. As I was hiking along I caught a view of two smoke headers to the north of me. I think Im going to be in a smokey area in a few days. My goal was 10-15 miles today and I ended up just shy of 15. I have about 120 miles to complete before 2:00 on Saturday. When I got to my planned mountain top spot there were three female backpackers camping there already so I found another spot not to far away.

A nice relaxing day and I still got in 15 miles,

Salty
