2018 PCT Section Hike - Day 1

Tons of people.

Cool weather.

1 non-poisonous snake.

4 liters of water.

29 pound pack to start.

Uneventful; sore.

Journal Note:

This year I decided to journal differently. Rather than write a narrative of the day, I just used my phone's note-pad to capture daily summarized thoughts. I found this much easier than trying to form coherent thoughts after a long day of hiking. My original thought was to take the summary and then write a narrative type entry after I got home, however, now I'm finding that it's hard to recapture the feelings of the day in my writing. Therefore, in this journal, I will just give the daily summary of thoughts and then give a post-hike reflection of the day...

Post-Hike Comments:

We got to the border at about 7am after leaving Yucaipa at 4:30 am. Scout and Frodo were delivering a large group of hikers at the same time so there was probably 30 people at the border when we arrived. Bob & Elizabeth, Eric, and I took our border/monument pictures then headed out. It was a really mild day (high in the mid 70's) and we easily made it to Lake Morena. Neither Bob & Elizabeth, nor Eric have done any long distance hiking of this type, so we were not sure exactly how it would go. During our pre-planning we had talked about the possibility that we might only get to Hauser Creek. As it turned out, all three of them did really well, and we made it to Lake Morena with no problems. I had the usual first day soreness but it was a familiar feeling that I embrace.
