Pacific Crest Trail Map

Day 1

Today was the day! I?ve been dreaming of this moment for years and sacrificed a lot to be here. We woke up at 5am at Scout and Frodo?s after only mediocre sleep (bed right next to bathroom, with people in and out being loud all night). Breakfast was at 5:30am, and then quickly out the door and into cars at 5:50. After an hour drive in a minivan, we arrived to the trailhead at 7am. Pulling up to the terminus was very emotional for me, as I have envisioned that moment thousands of times over and seen it in pictures and videos so many times. It was surreal. Once there, we took pictures, signed the trail register, were given another LNT lecture, and then went to stick our hands through the fence to touch official Mexican air. Then we set foot to trail.

I felt so energized to finally be on the PCT! It wasn?t too hot early in the morning, and the first few miles pretty much flew by. The desert is beautiful. Unfortunately our French Canadian friends were stopped at mile one with a blister already (yikes) and I?m concerned about how far they will actually make it on trail. I don?t want to doubt, but their packs are huge and they seem like they could benefit from more research. It was so cool to see all of the landmarks from the first day, such as they Canada/Mexico mileage sign at the railroad on mile 3. The wildflowers were so gorgeous today, and came in so many colors. I am lucky that this winter was such a wet one! We stopped for lunch at 12pm at mile 6.6 next to a small creek, and I had a tortilla with tuna (and some bacon sprinkled on) as well as one with peanut butter. I know they say hiker hunger takes a while to set in - but boy am I hungry!! I almost ate shit on some rocks coming down from our lunch spot, which freaked me out a little bit. Need to be careful so far from civilization.

After lunch we had an 8.8 mile dry stretch, which included the biggest climb of the day. I was feeling good, but was getting frustrated a bit with mom because she was going very slow and wanted to stop often. People were passing us, and not only did I feel concerned about being the last group to show up to camp (and possibly get shut out), but I also was feeling frustrated about missing out on potential social opportunities with other hikers, as well as not being able to set my own pace. Every time I felt myself getting into a groove, it felt like we took a break. We spent most of the day hiking with Jill, a woman who I would guess is 10 years older than my mom. She is the sweetest woman, and it was great to have her as a third party in our group. She has already section hiked other parts of the PCT, including the JMT.

The final 3 miles of our day was downhill into Hauser Creek. Since so many people had passed us, and it was 6:15 when we arrived, and I was worried it would be full. We managed to find some sites a little ways away from the main group, however. I set up camp as quickly as I could so that I could go get water. I wanted to get it out of the way so I don?t have to worry about it in the morning. Filtering water is a pain in the ass.

For dinner I had some Spanish rice and a hunk of Parmesan cheese with pita bread. Hit the spot! Hopefully will get a good night?s rest tonight. We start the morning with a 3 mile climb out of the creek.
