I'm 4.5 months from my desired departure date and I have less equipment than I did at 6 months out. My REI Half dome failed and needed to be returned. What would be another suitable shelter that I will be comfortable using. The Half Dome poles failed on my 2nd set up. Needless to say, I don’t want another shelter with poles. I would rather work Trekking poles.
I have narrowed my search to the following:
Tarptent Saddle 2 - $ 339, 36oz, 2 Trekking poles
Deschutes plus - $ 185, 16oz, 1 Trekking pole
Zpack duplex - $ 599, 19oz, 2 Trekking poles
If my decision is based on weight, cost and ease, I would chose the Deschutes Plus. However if I want another person to join me, I would go with Saddle 2. The Zpack has the best reviews overall. Touch choice.
Ultimately the questions I need to answer are:
Am I buying a shelter for the future or for a solo hike(s)?
How does this shelter handle moderate snow?
What kind of investment am I willing to make?
Will extra weight be worth it?
A Hopeful Journey
Uncovering the depths of my mind through the discovery of my soul.
