Idyllwild Zero

From: robwid

Subject: Taking a zero

I amm taking a zero in the beautiful mountain town of Idyllwild. The desert out of Scissors Crossing was spectacular. The bird song in the evening was really interesting. My wife would have loved it. Warner Springs was packed with hikers. It looked like a backpacking tent trade show. I had thought about camping a few miles down the trail to avoid the crowd but stayed the night. I did not pay attention to the trail conditions between Warner and Paradise Cafe and was surprised by the elevation gain! Further on I made it by the dreaded Apache Peak snow field without incident. It really wasnt that big a deal but I can see that it would have been tricky a few weeks ago with more snow. The wind was the strongest I have ever experienced! And, the trail followed a ridge through a burn all afternoon so I was completely exposed. I couldnt find a flat spot out of the wind to pitch my tent so had to cowboy camp. It was a long night. At times I really thought I might blow away!
