Tehachapi to Bird Spring Pass

Things haven't quite worked out as expected. I'm fine! Don't worry. As the Cole Porter song from Kiss Me Kate says It's Too Darn Hot!

Adam's wife, Laura, joined us for the first hour Climbing out of Tehachapi starting at 6:05am. We encountered 3 guys coming down. It was a dad and 2 sons, late teens early 20's? They were from Massacheusettes and had just been out for one night. Not em=nough water.

All was fine till the temp climbed into the high 90's. A 29 year old self described Ginger named Dirt Devil joined Adam and me. She had been on trial for a week and met no one. As she said she Velcroed herself to us. She hiked the AT in 2018 and the first 400 miles of the PCT in 2019. She knows her stuff.

On about the 4th day I baled off the trail at Bird Spring Pass. I hadn't been able to eat, drink or poop much. I couldn't keep up on the climbs. It was 102 on the ridge at 7 to 8 thousand feet above sea level. Booo.

It was a tough place to get a ride out of. After a couple of hours I got sigm=nal long enough to call a guy who drove an hour and a half up bad dirt roads to get me and then back down to Ridgecrest. I stayed at a motel there for 2 nights. It got up to 118 both days. I was trying to get my body functioning again.

There were no cars to rent until one canceled just before closing at noon on Saturday. I drove up to Kennedy Meadows on the PCT at mile 702 to meet up with Adam & Dirt Devil. Kennedy Meadows is way up high in the mountains with a frighteningly winding, cliff hugging and long road. I spent an uncomfortable night in the back of the 4Runner at the trail road crossing. They showed up mid morning and I drove us to the Grumpy Bear.

The folks at the Grumpy Bear fired up the big generator and fixed us some grub. We got some stuff at Triple Crown Outfitters, a cargo container next door. We camped out behind the Grumpy Bear and got showers for free.

After breakfast at the Grumpy Bear and another visit to TC Outfitters the 3 of us hit the trail at quarter past noon. I was just along for a day hike. I was much better but not quite right. It only got up to 95 but felt so much better with real trees around. We hiked up through Clover Meadows and to Beck Meadows. This is the section I hike through in 2008 at night time while it was on fire! I was amazed to see it again.
