The Red Moose cafe

Day 37. Journey to Sierra City

Day 37. Up before 7. Coffee & a banana for first brecky. Super smoky today. Can see a huge plume of thick white smoke rising up & trailing off to the north from the dixie fire. It seems there are no uber or lyft drivers in this area. I called a number I found on the pcta Facebook page for a guy who was drivinghikers around the fire closures but he was unable to help. The fires have greatly impacted his life as well. So we will try our luck with hitch hiking. We check out of our dive motel & head over to Lumberjacks for breakfast. The staff at this place is so wonderful even though they are very short handed. After Breakfast we walk to the edge of town just a few blocks away & stick out our thumbs. After about half an hour a car stops! It's so exciting when a car actually stops. There's an uber & a lyft logo on his windshield. He asks where we are going & says he can take us to the 395/70 intersection. He is headed to Reno where he lives & is not currently on the clock. He just happened to be passing thru the area. So we put our packs in the back & hop in. He says he was checking us out while he was stopped at the light & thought we looked harmless enough. This is only the 3rd time he has picked up hitch hikers. Well Jim turns out to be quite a character & likes to talk. A very likeable guy. At some point along 395 Kevin throws out a proposition. He offers Jim $ 100 if he'll take us all the way to Sierra City. Jim wants to check the mileage from the original drop off point to sierra city because now he will be going out of his way & of course he'll have to drive that same mileage back. It turns out to be 53 miles so we're on! What a brilliant move on kevin's part. By the time we get to our destination we know Jims entire life story. What a fun ride. We say our goodbyes & can't belive our good fortune at making it here all in one chunk. While we're standing curbside we are immediately greeted by a guy from the restaurant we're in front of which opens at 5. He gives us all sorts of info about the town including where to camp for free. We wander across the street to the red moose cafe for a cold drink. Steve, also a volunteer fire fighter, is behind the bar. Kev has a beer & I get pink lemonade. We inquire about a room & decide to stay here tonight. Steve gets the key & shows us to our room which is right next to the bar/cafe in the same building. How convenient. The room is lovely with a little kitchen area, bedroom, bathroom & our own deck with a view of the hills behind us. We drop our packs & head to the grocery store down the street where our resupply will hopefully come & pick up a few items. Back to the room, then at 5:30 we head across the street for a salad & pizza. Now we're just hanging out on the deck enjoying the view & beautifully clear blue sky.
