Day 17

Today was interesting- I started out by waking at 5:30 in the hostel. I got showered and packed up, and went with Miso to a cafe with lots of vegan options. We got there by 7:00, and the boys went to a diner close by. I got a smashed chickpea sandwich for breakfast, and got a different vegan sandwich with vegan cheese to go. I also got a vegan cookie to go. I was in vegan heaven.

We went a few blocks down at 8:00 to get picked up by a very nice woman who gave us a ride to the trailhead. We probably got on the trail at around 8:45 and got moving. I was leading the hiking train, and immediately went the wrong way. I really continue to earn my trail name

The trail was much flatter than its been in a long time. The hiking felt easy. Wed discussed earlier going twenty miles, to a campsite with amenities. Even though we hit the trail late, we got to the 20 mile campsite at 4:00. It felt early, and the campsite had a weird vibe. It wasnt pretty, and I had plenty of energy so kept going. By this point, I had met a guy from the Czech Republic and was hiking with him. Hes extremely fast- an ultra runner, climber, and mountaineer. He told me a story about running six miles without a pack to bring a girl back her jacket. Since he didnt have a trail name yet, I named him Runner (also his real name is very hard for me to pronounce, so that was additional motivation for me). He had started April 30th, and was doing some thirties already easily. He kept a slower pace so I could keep up.

I met up with Larry (now known as Keeper) at the 20 mile mark, and all three of us hiked together to a really nice spot at the 23 mile mark. Theres 360 views, its on a bit of a flat spot. Its a full moon, and the sunset was beautiful. Its 2 miles to water and I arrived at camp with only a liter. Im fine though, I have half a liter left, Ill wake at 5 and get on trail at 5:30. Ill reach water by 6:15. Runner convinced me to try cowboy camping for the first time (camping without a tent). It was so easy to set up however for the first night theres mosquitoes! Im just waiting for them to go away, and brushing them off me. Not great luck, however its a beautiful night and a full moon so Im hoping to see the sky tonight as a bonus to not having to set up or tear down my tent.
